About the Artist
Sorapong draws on his observation of the countryside around his Northern Thailand Chiang Mai home to create stylised representations of country scenes. Mountains and trees are the backdrop for his omnipresent water buffalo (kwai). These docile giants with their impressive spread of horns are still used even today by Thai rice farmers for ploughing and carting on the farms. The artist uses a pastel palette that is at once vibrant and at the same time tranquil in effect. Sorapong, who often uses the diptych or triptych format, extends his painting from tha face of the chunky canvas around to cover all four edges, thus uniting the picture with the wall on which it is hung.
